Motorcycle riding is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have, but it can also be quite dangerous if you’re not cautious. Even when you have all the right safety equipment and you’re driving responsibly, motorcycle accidents can still happen.

Whether you experience a low-speed or high-speed accident, it’s wise to understand what to do in a motorcycle crash as well as how to check your motorcycle after a crash.

If you are involved in the unfortunate event of a crash while riding your motorcycle, below is a motorcycle crash checklist for you to follow so that you can ensure you’re safe and protected.

What to Do in a Motorcycle Crash

If you’re involved in an accident on your bike, the first thing you want to do is remain as calm as possible. You may be injured, there may be chaos and confusion on the scene, but it’s best to remain as calm as possible so that you can execute the next steps carefully.

  • Move off the road and out of harm’s way. If you’re able to move, make sure you get out of the road.
  • Call 911.
  • Contact a motorcycle accident lawyer if the crash involves another party and it was caused by his or her negligence.
  • If another party was involved, gather their insurance information, and request a copy of the police report.
  • Call your insurance company and report the accident, following your motorcycle lawyer’s advice.

How to Check a Motorcycle After a Crash

The first step after a motorcycle accident is to stop and assess the situation. Take a beat to slow down and consider this motorcycle crash checklist:

  • Are you injured?
  • How did the accident happen?
  • How fast were you going?
  • Where did the incident occur?
  • Was another vehicle or party at fault?

Before you begin to examine your bike following the accident, be sure you’re analyzing those questions so that you can move forward properly.

If you were involved in a low-speed accident or crash, you may be able to safely check your motorcycle for any damage before moving along. In these cases, you can start by checking the:

  • engine case
  • footpegs
  • forks
  • kickstand
  • lights

Ensure that nothing has come loose or appears to have any visible damage. If there is any kind of damage to your engine case, call to have it towed to avoid any danger.

If there is any damage to your bike, be sure to take a few photos for your insurance company for evidence in a lawsuit.

LOW-SPEED VS. HIGH-SPEED CRASHES

If the accident was a high-speed crash, injuries and damages can be a lot more serious. Even if you were lucky enough to be unscathed in the incident, your motorcycle may not have been so lucky. It’s easy for the frame to become bent in a high-speed crash and driving on a bent frame can be incredibly dangerous. It’s almost always best practice to call for a tow after a high-speed motorcycle crash; don’t even bother going through the motorcycle crash checklist in this case.

A devastating crash on Interstate 10 in Cathedral City early Thursday morning claimed the lives of two men and left several others injured. The multi-vehicle collision occurred near Date Palm Drive around 6:40 a.m. when a westbound semi-truck lost control, crossed the center divider, and overturned into the eastbound lanes, colliding with oncoming traffic. Dashcam footage captured the terrifying moment the big rig veered into the opposite lanes. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office later identified the victims as 58-year-old Francisco Sicairos Leon of Desert Hot Springs and 49-year-old Miguel Macias of Santa Ana. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck survived the crash but sustained injuries. The collision caused significant traffic delays, shutting down all eastbound lanes for several hours. CHP officers reopened lanes 1 and 2 by 9:00 a.m., but the freeway wasn’t fully cleared and reopened until 2:20 p.m. as investigators and cleanup crews worked through the aftermath. According to CHP Officer David Torres, there were no signs that the semi-truck driver experienced a medical emergency, nor was there evidence of tire failure or substance impairment. Investigators are now focusing on other possible causes, such as fatigue, distracted driving, or mechanical failure. The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the crash. Tragedy struck Monday morning in Manteca when a street sweeper collided with a parked big rig, leading to the death of one person, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident happened around 8:27 a.m. on the southbound off-ramp from Highway 99 to Lathrop Road. Authorities reported that the big rig was stopped on the right shoulder, safely out of the traffic lanes. For reasons still under investigation, a street sweeper traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour struck the rear of the big rig. The driver of the street sweeper was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered critical injuries. Emergency responders transported the driver to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save their life, the driver was later pronounced dead. The CHP did not release the driver’s identity. The big rig had a passenger onboard who fortunately was not injured. At this time, the CHP does not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol at 209-938-4800.
