Now that elementary, junior high, high school, and colleges are back in session in Sacramento, more pedestrians are walking to and from school, bus stops, after-school activities, sports, homes of friends, after-school programs, and to their own residences.

With more people (and children) on the roads,  an increase in pedestrian injuries is likely. Of the top five causes of injury-related death in the United States, unintentional pedestrian injuries ranked 5th for children ages 5 to 19 with teenagers being at the greatest risk.

In fact, pedestrians were one of the few groups of road users to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States in 2012 totaling 4,743 deaths. On average, a pedestrian is killed every 2 hours and injured every seven minutes in traffic crashes. (Source: Traffic Safety Facts: Pedestrians, April 2014).

These alarming statistics had prompted the US Department of Transportation to make tools and funds available for communities to combat pedestrian accidents.

August 5, 2013 – WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced a new set of tools to help communities combat the rising number of pedestrian deaths that have occurred over the last two years. As part of the campaign, the Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is making $2 million in pedestrian safety grants available to cities with the highest rate of pedestrian deaths, and along with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is launching a one-stop-shop website www.nhtsa.gov/everyoneisapedestrian with safety tips and resources for local leaders, city planners, parents and others involved in improving pedestrian safety.

WALK Sacramento Promotes Pedestrian Safety

Given Sacramento’s mild climate, flat terrain, picturesque scenery, rivers, etc., walking and bicycling are viable and important transportation modes in our city. WALK Sacramento, a non-profit community organization working to achieve safe, walk-able communities in the Sacramento region has created a website containing valuable information for the Sacramento community found at www.walksacramento.org.

One of the key initiatives of WALK Sacramento is the implementation of Safe Routes to School. They have partnered with the following school and communities to do just that:

  • City of Citrus Heights and the San Juan Unified School District to conduct walk assessments of 11 area schools and create Safe Routes master plans for those schools.
  • City of West Sacramento and Washington Unified School District to assess 8 schools in the area and create a culture of walking to school.
  • Sacramento County DOT has created a Sacramento pedestrian map to educate Sacramento residents on pedestrian walkways.
  • Sacramento County DOT will also conduct walk assessments of 15 elementary and middle schools.

Sacramento Walk to School Day

October 7, 2015 marks Walk to School Day, an event that supports kids walking to and from school, and sponsored by WALK Sacramento. The non-profit hopes to answer the question: “Why Walk?” These are just a few of the answers they hope to promote.

  • Walking helps reduce childhood obesity rates and improve health of students.
  • It provides children with the physical activity they need each day.
  • Walking in the morning reduces excess energy which improves focus in class.

The California Highway Patrol has identified the victim of a tragic crash on Highway 1 near Black Road on Wednesday evening as a 28-year-old man from Santa Maria. According to the CHP's report, evidence indicates that the Santa Maria man was driving northbound on Highway 1 in a 2010 Ford when the accident occurred. Initial findings suggest that he collided with a parked harvesting trailer on the east shoulder, then continued northward and collided with another parked harvesting trailer. In the second collision, the man's vehicle became trapped under the trailer, resulting in fatal injuries to the driver. Emergency crews responded promptly to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel upon arrival. The CHP has stated that the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and at present, the driver's impairment status has not been determined. Late Saturday morning, tragedy struck on Pine Boulevard as an unidentified woman lost her life in a pedestrian crash. The incident unfolded around 11:00 a.m. on April 13th, on the northbound lanes of the road, just south of Rocky Pass. Details indicate that a 36-year-old male was operating a 2016 Ford F-550 heading northbound when, for reasons yet unknown, the vehicle veered off the road, striking a woman walking along the shoulder. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the 61-year-old female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have refrained from disclosing her identity pending notification of her next of kin, handled by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. In response to the collision, emergency services closed off the surrounding roadway to facilitate cleanup and initial procedures. Throughout the aftermath, the driver of the Ford F-550 remained on-site and cooperated with law enforcement. Initial assessments suggest that alcohol or drugs were not contributing factors in the tragic event on Pine Boulevard. Nevertheless, investigations into the incident are ongoing. In a tragic turn of events on the evening of April 19th, Fernando Porras Abrego found himself under arrest following a fatal DUI crash along Valley Center Road. The incident unfolded around 8:20 p.m. near the intersection with West Tribal Road. Abrego, behind the wheel of a southbound white Ford Expedition, collided with a white Toyota Camry driven by a 19-year-old male traveling east on West Tribal Road. The collision proved fatal for the young Camry driver, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities have withheld his identity pending notification of kin. Remarkably, Abrego, aged 34, emerged from the accident unscathed. However, law enforcement swiftly took him into custody, transporting him to Vista Detention Facility on DUI-related charges. As investigations into the crash continue, anyone with relevant information is urged to reach out to the Oceanside Area CHP office at 760-643-3400.
