What to Do If You Broke an Arm in a Bike Accident

June 21, 2024

In the unfortunate event that you break an arm during a bike accident, it's crucial to follow a series of steps to ensure you receive the best possible care and take necessary legal precautions. Today's blog will introduce you to several steps you can use to help you navigate the situation effectively.

Immediate Actions

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

After the accident, it's essential to stay as calm as possible to assess the situation clearly. Check for immediate dangers, such as incoming traffic or unstable surroundings. If it's safe, move to a secure area to avoid further injuries.

Call for Help

If you suspect your arm is broken, it's important to call emergency services right away. Dial 911 and provide them with your location and a description of the accident. If there are bystanders, ask for their assistance in making the call.

Immobilize the Arm

While waiting for emergency services, try to immobilize your arm to prevent further injury. If possible, create a makeshift sling using a piece of clothing to support the affected arm. Avoid moving the arm as much as possible.

Medical Treatment

Get to the Hospital

Once emergency services arrive, follow their instructions carefully. They are trained professionals who will assess your condition and provide immediate assistance. They will transport you to the nearest hospital or urgent care facility, where you will receive specialized medical attention from doctors and nurses. Make sure to provide them with any relevant medical history or information to ensure you get the best possible care.

Diagnostic Procedures

At the hospital, doctors will perform diagnostic tests, including X-rays, to assess the extent of the break. These tests are crucial in providing a clear image of the bone structure and identifying any misalignment or fractures. Based on the results, doctors will determine the appropriate treatment plan for your injury, which may include immobilization with a cast or splint, physical therapy, or, in some cases, surgical intervention. The goal is to ensure proper healing and restore functionality as soon as possible.

Follow the Treatment Plan

Depending on the severity of the fracture, the doctor may recommend a cast, splint, or surgery to stabilize the injury and promote healing. It is crucial to follow all medical advice diligently, including taking prescribed medications, keeping the affected area elevated, and avoiding unnecessary movement. Ensure you attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and address any complications promptly. Proper care and adherence to medical instructions will contribute significantly to a successful recovery.

Taking Care of Legal Matters

Document the Accident

While your memory is still fresh, make detailed notes about the accident. Include the date, time, location, and any contributing factors, such as road conditions or weather. If there were witnesses, collect their contact information as well.

Gather Evidence

Take photographs of the scene, your injuries, and any damage to your bike or other property. If possible, video footage from nearby surveillance cameras or dashcams should also be gathered.

File a Police Report

Contact the local police to file an official report of the accident. Provide them with all the necessary details, including the time, location, and parties involved. This document will be crucial for any potential legal actions or insurance claims, as it serves as an official record of the incident and helps establish the facts. Additionally, having a police report can expedite the resolution process with your insurance company and ensure that your rights are protected.

Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

Engaging a personal injury lawyer can be instrumental in ensuring your rights are protected and that you receive fair compensation. These professionals have the expertise to navigate the complexities of legal procedures, gather necessary evidence, and negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf. Their support can be crucial in achieving a favorable outcome, allowing you to focus on your recovery without the added stress of legal battles.

Why Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

A specialized attorney can help you navigate the complex legal landscape, deal with insurance companies, and maximize your compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

How to Choose the Right Lawyer

Look for a lawyer with extensive experience in personal injury cases, particularly those involving bike accidents. Check their track record, read client reviews, and perhaps even arrange for an initial consultation to gauge their suitability.

What to Expect

Your lawyer will guide you through the claims process, from filing paperwork to negotiating settlements. They will ensure all deadlines are met and represent your best interests throughout the legal proceedings.

Recovering and Moving Forward

Follow Rehabilitation Protocols

Physical therapy may be necessary to regain full function of your arm. Follow the rehabilitation protocols and exercises your healthcare provider prescribes to facilitate a speedy recovery.

Mental and Emotional Support

A bike accident can be a traumatic experience. Don’t hesitate to seek mental and emotional support through counseling or support groups.

Plan for a Safe Return to Cycling

Once you've healed, take measures to ensure a safer return to cycling. Invest in quality protective gear, regularly maintain your bike, and stay informed about safe cycling practices.

By following these steps, you can manage the immediate and long-term impacts of a broken arm due to a bike accident effectively. Prioritize your health and legal rights to ensure a swift and just recovery. If you've been injured in a bike accident and need legal help, contact Frank Penney Injury Lawyers for more information.

A devastating crash on the 15 Freeway in Temecula late Saturday night left four people dead and two others injured after a BMW M4, allegedly driven recklessly, lost control and caused a head-on collision. The California Highway Patrol reported the crash around 9:33 p.m. when the BMW, traveling north of Winchester Road, swerved left, struck a concrete median, and flew into the southbound lanes. The car veered into the far-right lane and collided head-on with a white Nissan Sentra. The BMW burst into flames moments after impact. Good Samaritans were able to pull the BMW’s driver, a 25-year-old man from Moreno Valley, from the burning vehicle. He suffered major injuries and was rushed to a hospital. Tragically, his passengers did not survive. A 23-year-old woman in the front seat and two Moreno Valley teenagers, a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl in the back, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan’s driver, a 35-year-old man from Wildomar, was taken to a hospital but did not survive the trip. His passenger, a 22-year-old man, remains in critical condition. Authorities said that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, but charges against the BMW driver are pending as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding what they describe as reckless driving. As of Sunday afternoon, none of the victims had been publicly identified.
