Tragic Accident Claims Life in Fresno County: Understanding the Details

Frank Penney • March 19, 2024

In a heartbreaking incident in Fresno County, a fatal crash involving a semi-truck took the life of a young man identified as 21-year-old Mario Calderas from Caruthers.

The collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lincoln and Marks Avenue, just west of Easton. According to reports from the Fresno County Corner's Office, Calderas, driving a Toyota SUV, failed to heed a stop sign on Marks Avenue and collided with an oncoming semi-truck traveling eastbound on Lincoln Avenue.

The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in Calderas being ejected from his vehicle. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted that Calderas was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, highlighting the importance of seat belt safety.

The aftermath of the collision saw the semi-truck careen off the road and into a ditch, igniting into flames. Remarkably, the driver of the truck managed to escape with only minor injuries, underscoring the potential dangers faced by truck drivers on our roads.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, probing whether alcohol or drugs played a role. Toxicology results are pending, shedding light on potential contributing factors to this devastating crash.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mario Calderas during this difficult time. Let us all strive to prioritize safety behind the wheel and work towards preventing such tragedies in the future.

A devastating crash in Piedmont, California, that killed three young adults in November 2024 is now being further illuminated by toxicology reports. Nineteen-year-old Soren Dixon, the driver of a Tesla Cybertruck that slammed into a tree and wall at around 3:00 a.m., was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.195%—more than twice the legal limit—and had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. The collision claimed the lives of Dixon and two of his passengers, Jack Nelson, 20, and Krysta Tsukahara, 19, all of whom were graduates of Piedmont High School. Dixon had been attending the University of Southern California, Nelson was a student at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Tsukahara was a sophomore at the Savannah College of Art and Design. According to autopsy and toxicology reports, both Nelson and Tsukahara also had alcohol and cocaine in their systems. Nelson’s blood alcohol content was measured at 0.168%, while Tsukahara’s was 0.028%. All three were pronounced dead at the scene and suffered severe burns as a result of the crash. A fourth passenger, identified as 20-year-old Jordan Miller, was pulled from the vehicle by a passing motorist and was hospitalized in stable condition. Miller, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin, survived the crash and was later identified by his mother. The tragic accident occurred during Thanksgiving break, and authorities believe the group was home visiting for the holiday. In a statement released on Facebook, Piedmont Police expressed their condolences, saying, “Our hearts remain heavy in the aftermath of the tragic vehicle collision,” and thanked the community for its support during a profoundly difficult time.
