Dog Bites and Children: All You Need to Know

May 26, 2022

Dogs are an essential family member in 37% of US homes but are a potential source of injury for children. Because children cannot understand dog temperament, they are the most common victims of dog bites.

Parents need to understand that dogs are no substitute for adult supervision. Children may not know how to interact with dogs, so it's up to parents to learn about dog safety and take precautions.

Dog bites can cause severe physical and psychological damage. Fortunately, most dog bites are preventable. Understanding the underlying reasons for a dog bite is critical in preventing them.

Why Do Dogs Bite?

Dogs bite for several reasons. You may scream and frighten a dog. A dog can also bite to protect their food or something valuable, like puppies. In rare cases, the victim may not need to provoke a dog. For instance, when a dog is ill it may be more aggressive and protective.

Common sense says we can prevent dog bites when we avoid certain behaviors around dogs. Here are a couple of things you should never do:

  • Pull on a dog's ears or tail
  • Growl at a dog
  • Kick a dog
  • Corner a dog
  • Pet a strange dog

Why Are Children At Greater Risk?

An adult generally has better judgment than a child. Babies and toddlers can be intimidating to dogs as they become more agile and mobile. Preschool children are especially very impulsive.

Innocent actions such as jumping on their back, hugging, or petting may invoke aggression in a dog. Unfortunately, children are not adept at picking up subtle warning signs of an agitated dog. An agitated dog may bite a child.

Adults can fend off a dog attack, while children cannot defend themselves. A typical dog bite occurs to the neck, head, and face of a child and may require complex treatment.

Common Dog Bite Myths

A dog bite on a child is usually met with much emotion and confusion. Parents and dog owners generally lack knowledge of safety practices.

Separating myths from truths may help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Myth 1: Dogs Socialized With Children Won't Bite

Socializing your dog reduces the chances of your dog biting. Introducing your dog to people and other animals while young makes the animal more comfortable as it gets older.

However, socialization alone is not enough to prevent a dog from biting. A dog can bite a family or a neighbor's child due to pain, fear, or resource guarding. Socialized dogs can still bite strangers if provoked.

Myth 2: Only Large Breeds Bite

Any pure or mixed-breed dog can bite a child. Small dogs like the Chihuahuas may also bite when anxious or threatened. Some large dog breeds that are universally known to be vicious include:

  • Pitbulls
  • Rottweilers
  • German shepherds

Myth 3: A Wagging Tail Is a Sign of Friendliness

A canine's behavior is easy to misinterpret, even for adults. A tail wag is often misconstrued as a sign of friendliness, but it could mean many things.

Dogs wag tails when they are ready to "interact" by playing, greeting, or fighting. Observe the rotation, speed, and tension of a tail to help you understand its significance.

A friendly tail wagging is a full-body wag with a flexible swinging of the tail from side to side. An unfriendly tail wag looks different. Before biting a child, a dog may display an unfriendly tail wag.

Immediately after a biting incident, consult your doctor to stop the spread of infections, if any. Pursuing dog bite damages is uncomfortable, especially when the person liable is a family or a friend.

A tragic accident in Laguna Beach claimed the life of a 64-year-old father who was teaching his teenage daughter how to drive. The crash occurred late Monday afternoon along the Pacific Coast Highway, a route known for its scenic beauty, and, unfortunately, its share of dangers. James Politoski was in the passenger seat when the car, reportedly driven by his 15-year-old daughter with a learner’s permit, lost control. Authorities say the vehicle broke through a fence barrier, tumbled down an embankment, and flipped upside down onto the highway below. Laguna Beach police arrived at the crash at around 2:45 p.m., and the father was pronounced dead at the scene. The daughter was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with significant injuries, police said. As of Wednesday morning, the teenager was in stable condition at the hospital and expected to survive. The Laguna Beach Police Department, which confirmed the details of the incident, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Lieutenant Jesse Schmidt called it a heartbreaking situation, noting that it not only devastated the families involved but also sent shockwaves through the entire community. “It is always difficult when an accident leads to the loss of life, especially under circumstances where a parent was simply trying to do the right thing by teaching their child a valuable life skill,” he said. A Monterey County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle was involved in a crash Wednesday at the intersection of Blanco and Davis Roads. According to preliminary reports, a white Audi was heading east on Blanco while the sheriff’s vehicle was traveling south, responding to a domestic incident with its lights and sirens on. Witnesses on the scene shared that the Audi had a green light as it entered the intersection. As the patrol vehicle attempted to clear the intersection, the two vehicles collided. The impact left the Audi crumpled against a traffic pole with noticeable damage to the driver’s side and a deployed airbag. The patrol vehicle suffered front-end damage. A 54-year-old woman who had been driving the Audi was trapped inside and had to be extricated by emergency responders. She was transported to the hospital for treatment. Despite the crash, traffic in the area remains open, though delays have been reported. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation. An early morning crash on Interstate 5 near Highway 152, just west of Los Banos in Merced County, has left one man dead and several others seriously injured. The collision occurred before 5 a.m. Thursday when a van carrying eight people was rear-ended by a big rig as it attempted to exit the highway. The force of the impact pushed the van off the road, sending it into a guardrail before it rolled down an embankment. According to the California Highway Patrol, one man was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released. Three other men suffered major injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Officers noted that none of the four individuals who were ejected or injured had been wearing seatbelts. The remaining four passengers, who were wearing seatbelts, were unharmed. The van had been traveling from Mendota. The driver of the big rig reportedly fled the scene, and authorities are now treating the case as a suspected hit-and-run. Investigators continue to search for the truck driver involved in the crash.
