How to Prevent Car Accidents During the Holidays

The holidays present a special time to gather with family, friends, and loved ones from near and far. It’s also a time with more people on the roads. Although the holidays are often the ideal time to make that trip over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house, there are extra hazards on the road during this time.

Whether it’s due to the winter elements, poor maintenance on your vehicle, or another driver’s carelessness, there are more car accidents during the holidays. While you may not be able to control the hazards like the weather and other drivers’ behavior, there are some steps you can take to prevent car accidents this holiday season.

Car Accident Prevention Tips

If you’re planning to hit the road this holiday season, follow these car accident prevention tips to help keep you and your fellow drivers safe on the roads:

  • Check tire tread. Although the thought of having to buy a new set of tires or a set of winter-specific treads sounds daunting during the holidays, it’s essential that you have proper tread. Tires that don’t have adequate tread won’t provide the amount of traction you need to safely navigate winter roads.
  • Measure tire pressure. Cold weather can seriously decrease the amount of pressure in your tires. Before you set out on a trip, be sure to check that you have the proper amount of pressure in all your tires. Tires that don’t have proper pressure can lead to flats, blowouts, and unnecessary wear and tear.
  • Fill up your tank. During winter and holiday road trips, it’s advisable to maintain at least half a tank of gas at all times. You don’t want to get stuck in a snowstorm or behind an accident and run out of gas.
  • Drive defensively. Remember that there are always drunk drivers on the road. Holiday parties, especially New Year’s Eve parties, increase the odds of you sharing the road with someone who’s had a little too much nog.
  • Don’t drive for too long without a break. Driving tired is one of the biggest causes of car accidents. During the holiday season with more traffic on the roads, the risks are even greater. Be sure to take breaks often and if there’s more than one driver in the car to switch every few hours. Also, stop and get a good night’s rest—you’ll be glad you did.
  • Pay attention to the weather report. Be vigilant about the weather from where you are to where you’re going. If you’re traveling a long distance, the weather may look fine from where you start but a winter storm could be brewing along the way. Be as prepared as possible.
